“Should I tell the truth?”
Plenty of candidates wrestle with this. The question about motivation comes up in every interview, and the answer is not always easy – particularly when the reason lies in a difficult situation at a previous employer.
How do you stay honest and professional without blaming your former employer?
🔷 Talk about facts, not feelings – concentrate on setting out the situation constructively.
Authenticity builds trust.Speaking openly about your motivations, expectations and challenges shows maturity.
How should you frame your answer with a recruiter or a prospective employer?
Here are a few pointers:
- If you left because of a difficult relationship with your manager, you might say: “My manager has a style of leading that I am not comfortable with, which makes working together harder. I tried to adapt, but in the end I concluded that changing jobs would be the better answer.”
- If the lack of development tipped your decision – “At my previous company I had exhausted the development paths open to me.”
- If your employer promised you a promotion and did not keep their word – “I wanted to develop in the area of …, but things at the company changed, which is why I applied for the role of … with you.”
- Wanting to grow – go through the advert and explain what makes the role attractive to you and how it fits your longer-term career goals.
Financial trouble at the company? – “My employer is struggling financially, and I have no certainty about the future or the security of my job.” - Personal reasons? – “Because of my family circumstances I am looking for work closer to home.”
- A workplace culture that does not suit you – “The culture at this company differs from my previous experience and from how I prefer to work. I am looking for somewhere that fits my values and my way of working better.”
- Returning to work after a break? How do you explain gaps in your employment history?“I needed time to settle things at home.” “After an intense period at work I needed time to step back and think about what I wanted to do next.”“I had always dreamed of travelling – and I made that dream happen.” “After my last job I gave myself time to find work that matched my skills and the direction I want to grow in, somewhere I could stay for the long term.”
Why is it worth being honest?
